Lung cancer cells spread like unanchored tents, study says – BBC News

The metastatic bits of cancer spread to other places
in the body are already there at the time of the lung cancer diagnosis.
A tumor mass with one billion cells is only roughly a marble is size.
We are lucky if we can see a tumor 1cm in diameter with any scans we have.
Millions of lung cancer cells could be in the bones, liver, brain, adrenal glands
or other sites and every scan will look clear.
So when metastatic tumors from the lung become visible or symptomatic
– they have already been growing for months or years.
