Many of us believe that if food falls and stays on the floor for less than five seconds, it’s safe to eat. But it turns out that new research disproves this belief.
Until recently, there hadn’t been much research on this topic. But now scientists have tested various types of food and found that even food dropped for a fraction of a second acquires bacteria. So the old myth of “the five second rule” is untrue. Some foods fare better than others — gummy candies picked up fewest germs, while watermelon picked up the most. But all foods dropped on the floor picked up some germs instantaneously.
